“Are they really brothers?”
“Dude, I don’t know. You’re the one who took acid.”
The sold-out crowd buzzed with questions and anticipation minutes before the first Ween show in Austin in seven years. And they roared approval when the five-piece band launched into “Marble Tulip Juicy Tree” from their debut album. That love and energy from the fans carried pseudo-siblings Gene and Dean Ween on a two-hour romp through the band’s long history and many musical styles.
A rocking opener, the sea shanty “She Wanted to Leave,” and pop song “Boy’s Club” served as warmups to a highlight of the show: “I’ll Be Your Jonny on the Spot.” The frenetic classic featured an enthusiastic, albeit sloppy, guitar solo by Dean (aka Mickey Melchiondo).
That song marked a turning point, as the band seemed reenergized as they hit the first notes of “Seconds.” The intensity didn’t let up until “The Argus”—which brought out lighters in the crowd. The band finished the set with fan favorites and an encore of oldies that sent everyone home satisfied.
